Why Salt Blocks?

The Dairy Mineral range is specifically designed for New Zealand pastoral dairy systems to provide an essential source of trace minerals (Se, Co, Zn, I, Cu, Mg) with salt as a carrier. Mineralised salt products are a cost-effective, simple and successful way of preventing mineral deficiencies and maintaining healthy high producing dairy cows.

Whether the farm is set up for delivery via trough, drench or feed there is a product available. The dry mineral mixes (Multimix, Multimag) can be added to silages and grain feeds or fed on their own in feed troughs. The soluble mineral mixes (Liquimag, Liquimin) can be drenched or added to water troughs via manual application or automatic dispensing systems.

Salt – Common salt (sodium chloride) is an essential constituent of an animal’s diet. Because many New Zealand pastures are deficient in sodium, some form of supplementation is often necessary. The benefits of sodium supplementation have long been proven, most recently through a trial conducted near Rotorua by AgResearch in 1999-2000. Dairy cows supplemented with 35gm/day salt achieved an extra 12.8% in milk production. Milk yield responses occurred immediately and continued through the trial.1

Sodium is routinely expelled from the body in milk, urine, faeces, sweat, and saliva. Sodium should be available to farm animals every day and because of this, is a convenient carrier of other minerals.

New Zealand dairy cows grazing pasture are most susceptible to deficiencies of cobalt, copper, iodine, and selenium.

Zinc supplementation is also important for immunity and hoof health.

Trace mineral deficiencies may induce problems such as abortions, retained placentas, mastitis, and infertility.
